How to set up a Discord verification bot

A verification bot keeps bots and spam accounts out of your channels until they pass a challenge. Here is how to set one up with Verifier.

October 2026

Why verify new members

Without a gate, every account that joins can read and post right away, including bots, spam accounts and raiders. A verification bot holds new members in a single welcome channel until they pass a challenge, then gives them the roles that open the rest of the server.

Pick a verification method

Verifier has four methods. You can switch to another one later without setting everything up again.

  • Discord Captcha: the member solves a captcha without leaving Discord.
  • Web Captcha: the member opens a link and solves a captcha in their browser.
  • Passphrase: the member types a phrase you choose, 5 to 100 characters long. Put it in your rules so members have to read them first.
  • Click to Pass: one click on the verify button. It has no security check, so use it only when you need the role gate and nothing else.

Set it up

Run /verification create in your server. You need the Manage Server permission.

  • Welcome channel: where Verifier posts the welcome message with the verify button.
  • Verification method: one of the four above.
  • Unverified role: given to new members and removed once they verify. Leave it empty to use `@everyone`.
  • Verified roles: up to 3 roles given once a member verifies.
  • Welcome message: the text above the button, up to 2,000 characters.

Hide your channels until members verify

Verifier gives and removes roles; your channel permissions decide what each role can see. Let the unverified role (or @everyone) see only the welcome channel, and let the verified roles see the rest.

Verifier can only manage roles below its own highest role. Drag the Verifier role above the roles it gives in Server Settings › Roles.

Stop members who keep failing

After a number of failed rounds, from 1 to 10, the member is locked out for a while. A static lockout always waits the same time; an escalating lockout, part of Premium Gold, waits longer each time, from 1 minute up to 24 hours.

/verification unlock lifts a lockout early, and /verification verify lets a member in without a challenge.

Extras for larger servers

Premium adds a few options on top, through Patreon.

  • Auto verification on rejoin (Silver): members who rejoin within the time you set after verifying get in without a challenge.
  • Verification Activity (Silver): a chart of started, completed, failed and expired verifications, day by day.
  • Freeze verification (Diamond): stops all new verifications for 30 minutes up to 7 days, or until you unfreeze it.
