How to stop alt accounts on Discord

Alt accounts are usually brand new when they join. Here is how to catch them by account age and decide what happens to them.

What alt accounts are

An alt is a second account. People use them to come back after a ban, to raid with many accounts at once, or to spam under several names. Most are created shortly before they join your server.

Discord shows when every account was created, so account age is the simplest sign that a member might be an alt.

Set a minimum account age

Run /alt-identifier create and set the minimum account age in days, from 1 to 90. Every member who joins with a younger account is caught. Start low, such as 7 days, and raise it if alts still get through.

The alt identifier is free on every server. You need the Manage Server permission to set it up.

Choose what happens

Pick one action for the accounts it catches:

  • Flag only: let them in and record the catch in the audit log.
  • Hold in verification: they can't verify until their account is old enough. Needs a verification system.
  • Time out: a Discord timeout until the account is old enough, at most 28 days. Needs the Timeout Members permission.
  • Kick: remove them and tell them why in a DM. Needs the Kick Members permission.
  • Ban: ban them and tell them why in a DM. Needs the Ban Members permission.
  • Ban after kicks: with Kick, ban accounts that come back after a number of kicks, up to 10.

Let real members in

Some real people make a new account. /alt-identifier allow lets one user in before their account is old enough.

Use it with verification

The alt identifier checks every member before verification. Accounts it kicks or bans never see the welcome channel, and held accounts can't verify until they are old enough. Verification then stops the bots that use older accounts.
